Questions & Answers
Q -What types of projects does Whitten Design Group specialize In?
A -Our forte is the design and construction drawings for new, single-family, custom homes, both large and small, we also do a large number of remodel and addition projects, and we do site planning and some commercial projects.
Q – What services do you provide?
A – On a typical project, we work with the client all the way from preliminary design, through the permit process, and final construction plans which contain all the information the builder will need to construct your home.
Q -How do I start the design process for a new home, addition or remodel?
A -For many of our clients, the journey begins as a “Pursuit of the Dream! ”We like to meet with potential clients (virtually or in person) to discuss goals, wish lists, inspiration pictures and any other thoughts our client may want to share. Visiting the property and reviewing topographic or site plans will provide further insight into the project.
Q – Do you have the ability to provide 3D visualization for a project?
A- Yes, if our client desires this, we can produce basic massing models using 3D visualization. We also have the ability to produce photo-realistic images of the project, both interior and exterior. You can see examples of this type of visualization on our website. Finally, we can produce physical 3D models that you can take home using our 3D printer technology.
Q – How do I understand the feasibility of my project?
A -Building and Zoning codes, HOA restrictions, permits, site limitations and budget all play a part in ascertaining feasibility. Researching these items first along with our knowledge of the permit processes for various cities and counties allows us to provide the most accurate answers to this question.
Q – Do I need to hire a Contractor before I start the design process?
A – No, this is not necessary. If you know the contractor you want to use, they can certainly be a sounding board during design. Many of our clients don’t select a general contractor until the later phases of design.
Q – How do you handle design for projects that may be long distance? Or not local?
A – Virtual communication and electronic data sharing has made long-distance, or non-local projects, much easier. We’ve been involved in the design of homes throughout the U.S. as well as some internationally. All of the same feasibility questions apply.
Q – What is the process and timeline for designing a custom home?
A – Starting with conceptual design we create rather simple diagrams and images illustrating space association, general integration on the site and preliminary exterior images.
Schematic Design follows with floor plans, exterior elevations, a more detailed site plan, potential exterior finishes and preliminary structures.
Design Development is the next phase where we begin to finalize design and are coordinating with engineers and consultants.
Construction Documents -during this phase, detailed plans, exterior elevations, sections and details are coordinated and issued for permits, final pricing and construction.
Timelines for these services vary greatly based on things such as:
- Complexity of design
- Client’s availability for design meetings
- Required entitlements or permits by individual municipalities
- Number of design options to be considered
- Completion of reports such as soils analysis
- Amount of 3D presentations and renderings to be created
- Interior design consulting and modifications
We are vigilant throughout the project to keep it moving forward and pride ourselves on fast response times to any revisions that are needed during the project. We also are very aware of various municipalities’ permit requirements and processes which limit delays in getting permits processed.
Q – What are the fees for your services?
A – Like timelines, our fees are unique to almost all our projects. After our first communications and initial free consultation to understand the scope of your project, we will provide a proposal outlining our services, fees and payment schedule.
Q – What other consultants are needed to complete the design process?
A – Typically there are a few consultants required on most of our projects. Some require a greater group of specialty services. Some of the consultants may include;
- Soils engineer
- Structural engineer
- Civil engineer
- Energy analysis
- Interior designer
- Sustainable/green building advisor
- Landscape designer
- Surveyor
- Smart home / technical consultant
- Lighting designer
Q – How much freedom do I have during the design process?
A – We like to allow our clients to shape the ultimate outcome of their project. We will always guide you toward the best solution but in the end, this is your project.
Q – Do you take credit cards?
A – Yes, we do. We have a secure link noted on every invoice you receive from us allowing you to have complete control over your payment when using a credit card.
Q – Can you provide examples of the designs you have created?
A – Yes. The bulk of our design projects are unique, one-of-a-kind
builds. We have been involved in
projects with a variety of styles from farmhouse to contemporary, modern to
prairie and many more. We’re happy to provide examples that may have
commonality with your project.
